Amazon Handmade fees, explained — and calculated

Amazon Handmade keeps it to one number: a referral fee of 15% on what the buyer pays, or $1.00 per item, whichever is greater. No listing fees, and the monthly Professional plan is waived for approved artisans.

Run your sale through the calculator, then read what the single rate actually means at different prices — the part most fee pages skip.

This is the standard sale used on every calculator here and on the six-marketplace comparison, so the platforms can be held against each other — which is why it differs from the boxes at the top of the page. Put your own numbers up there and the breakdown follows. Approved Handmade seller, so the monthly Professional fee is waived. The postage label is left out of this example; the calculator above takes it.

The one fee, precisely

Handmade's referral fee is 15% in every Handmade category — Accessories through Toys & Games — charged on the total the buyer pays: item price plus shipping and gift wrap, excluding taxes Amazon collects. There is no category table to look up and no tier to cross. Among the six marketplaces here, that simplicity is unusual: Walmart alone has 36 category rows, and eBay's rate changes with category and with whether you hold a store subscription.

There is one exception to the flat rate, and it is the floor: if 15% of the order works out below $1.00, you pay $1.00 instead. The calculator switches to the minimum automatically and labels the line so you can see which rule applied.

Shipping is inside the base, as it is on Etsy, eBay and Walmart. Charging a dollar for the item and twenty for postage changes nothing about the fee; it only changes how the offer reads to a shopper who is comparing delivered prices.

The $1.00 minimum, and the price where it starts to bite

The crossover point is straightforward arithmetic: $1.00 is what 15% comes to on an order of about $6.67. Above that amount of buyer spend you pay the percentage; below it you pay the floor, and the effective rate rises as the order shrinks.

In practice that means a $5 item with free shipping pays $1.00 — an effective twenty per cent. A $3 sticker pays the same $1.00, an effective third of the order. Nothing about the fee schedule is unusual; the arithmetic is simply unforgiving at the bottom of the price range, and it is the single most useful thing to know before listing a range of small items.

There are two sane responses. Bundle: three stickers at $9 pays the percentage rather than three separate floors. Or price the cheap item as a route to the expensive one and accept the rate on it deliberately. What does not work is pricing a $4 item as though the fee were 15% — it is not, and the margin disappears quietly.

What you do not pay on Handmade

No listing fees, and Handmade listings do not expire — which is a meaningful difference from Etsy, where every listing costs $0.20 and renews at $0.20 on a cycle and after each sale. A large, slow-moving Handmade catalogue is free to keep; a large, slow-moving Etsy catalogue is not.

No monthly plan fee either, for approved sellers. Amazon's Professional selling plan is $39.99 a month — $479.88 a year — and it is waived for approved Handmade sellers after the first month, for as long as the account stays approved with eligible products. That waiver is the quietest part of the Handmade proposition and arguably the largest: it is a fixed cost removed rather than a rate reduced, so it is worth most to the seller with the fewest orders.

And no closing fee on Handmade categories, which regular Amazon media categories do carry.

Handmade against the rest of Amazon, and against the other five

Inside Amazon, ordinary categories mostly charge between eight and fifteen per cent referral with a $0.30 per-item minimum, plus the $39.99 monthly plan that Handmade sellers do not pay. Handmade trades a flat 15% — the top of that range — for the waived subscription, no listing costs and access to the Handmade storefront. For genuinely handcrafted goods at craft-fair prices that trade usually wins, and the arithmetic flips only at high volume where the monthly fee amortises to nothing.

Against the other marketplaces on this site, 15% is the highest single headline rate here except for Walmart's dearest category rows. But headline rates mislead in both directions: eBay's 13.6% already contains payment processing, while Etsy's 6.5% does not and needs 3% + $0.25 added to it. Handmade's 15% is genuinely all of it — there is no processing line to add.

Put the same sale through the hub and read the rows rather than the adjectives.

Why FBA is not in this number

The calculator models a seller-fulfilled order: you print the label, and your real postage cost is the number you type into the costs field. That is how most Handmade sellers ship, and it is the only version of the arithmetic we can compute honestly.

Fulfilment by Amazon replaces your shipping cost with Amazon's own fulfilment fees, priced by product size tier and weight, plus monthly storage that varies by season. Those are real and often competitive, but they are a rate card rather than a rate, and inventing a figure for them here would make the whole page less trustworthy. Amazon's own revenue calculator covers that case with your actual dimensions.

The same reasoning keeps Walmart Fulfillment Services out of the Walmart calculator on this site. A number we cannot verify does not go on a page whose argument is that its numbers are verified.

What the fee does not buy: being found on Amazon

The referral fee buys you a place in Amazon's catalogue. It does not buy you a place in Amazon's results, and Handmade listings compete in the same search as everything else.

Amazon is also the platform in this group that has changed its listing rules most recently and most sharply — the title cap was cut dramatically in 2026 and a separate highlights field appeared alongside it, which means a listing written to the old rules is now over the limit and silently truncated. Bullets are mandatory, and the search-terms field is measured in bytes rather than characters, so accented and non-Latin words cost more of the budget than they appear to.

Those caps live in one registry on this site and drive both the generator and the marketplace guide, so neither can quietly go stale. The fee page's job stops at the fee; the link below picks up where it ends.

Free on this page, and what the Amazon Handmade generator writes

Free on this page, no account

  • The referral fee with the $1.00 floor applied automatically and labelled
  • Net profit and margin after your materials and your real label cost
  • The current rate with the date it was verified against Amazon's own help page
  • No account, no email, nothing stored

In the Amazon Handmade generator

  • A title inside Amazon's current character cap, which is far shorter than it was
  • The Item Highlights field filled in, not left empty
  • Bullets and a description written to Amazon's requirements
  • A 0–100 score on the text before you upload it
  • The same product rewritten for Etsy, eBay, Walmart, Shopify or Depop

The fee is the marketplace's decision and it does not move. What the listing says is yours, and that is the part this site was built to write.

Questions, answered

Is the referral fee charged on shipping too?

Yes — 15% applies to the item price plus shipping and gift wrap charges (taxes excluded). Charging $1 for the item and $20 for shipping doesn't reduce the fee.

When does the $1.00 minimum apply?

Whenever 15% of the order would come to less than $1.00 — that is, below $6.67 of item plus shipping. Below that point the fee stops being a percentage and becomes a flat amount, so the effective rate rises as the price falls.

Do I pay the $39.99 Professional fee?

Approved Handmade sellers get it waived after the first month, for as long as they remain approved with eligible products. Without Handmade approval, the standard Professional fee applies — $479.88 a year.

Are there listing fees on Handmade?

No — creating listings is free and Handmade listings don't expire, unlike Etsy, where each listing costs $0.20 and renews on a cycle and after every sale.

Does this include FBA fees?

No — the calculator models seller-fulfilled orders (your own label cost). FBA replaces your shipping cost with Amazon's fulfillment fees, which vary by size and weight; Amazon's revenue calculator covers those.
