Whether a name is free is Etsy's to say. Type your favorite into the shop name field while you open your shop: Etsy tells you on the spot, suggests others if it's taken and holds yours while you finish. Etsy's rules for shop names

Etsy lists five requirements when you choose a shop name. The first two are about spelling, the other three about who else has the name.

What makes a shop name work

Etsy's rules decide what the form accepts. What makes a name work for buyers is our advice, not Etsy's, so it's labelled as ours here and in the check below the ideas:

  • It reads without spaces: a capital for each word, WickAndWillow rather than wickandwillow.
  • It survives being said out loud: a buyer who hears it once can type it.
  • No look-alike characters side by side: I, l and 1, or O and 0, blur together in many fonts.
  • It leaves room to grow: CandlesByAnna is stuck if Anna starts making soap, WickAndWillow isn't.
  • It's yours: no brand, character or famous name, which also keeps it inside Etsy's trademark rule.

Shop name vs shop title

They're two different fields, and new sellers often mix them up. The shop name is your address on Etsy. The shop title is the one line under it that tells buyers, and search engines, what you sell.

Changing your name later

Before your shop opens you can change the name as often as you like. Once it's open, Etsy allows 5 changes in your shop settings, and after that a change needs Etsy Support's approval. Fixing the capitalization, or going back to a name you used before, doesn't count as a change.

A change moves your shop's web address, and links to the old name redirect to the new one. For 45 days Etsy shows an icon next to your shop name so buyers know it changed, and nobody else can take the old name. Update your logo, banner and About section if they carry the old one.

Your name is set. Now the first listing

Etsy won't open your shop until it has its first listing, so that's the next thing to write.
