How to start an Etsy shop: setup, real costs, and first listings that get found
By Oleksandr Shaniuk · founder of Sellura · Updated October 3, 2026
To start an Etsy shop, sign in to an Etsy account on a desktop browser, go to etsy.com/sell and select Get started, then follow Etsy's sign-up in its own order: shop language, country and currency, a shop name, a bank account and a card, identity verification, two-factor sign-in, your storefront and a first listing. Etsy charges $0.20 to publish each listing and no monthly fee unless you choose Etsy Plus, then takes 6.5% of each sale plus shipping and, for a US bank account, 3% + $0.25 in payment processing. It may also charge a one-time set-up fee: Etsy says the cost varies by location and shows it during sign-up, and none of the Etsy pages we read on 3 October 2026 publishes the amount.
- Etsy's one-time set-up fee
- Not published
- Shown at sign-up, cost varies by location
- To publish each listing
- $0.20
- Live four months, then renews at $0.20
- Transaction fee on item price and shipping
- 6.5%
- US processing adds 3% + $0.25 an order
- Tags per listing, up to 20 characters each
- 13 tags
- Titles run up to 140 characters
Whether anyone finds the shop is decided by the first listing. Etsy says its search reads your title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and reviews to match a shopper's words, and its search-visibility checklist asks every listing for a clear, high-resolution first photo, the most specific category and a return policy. Below: Etsy's steps as a checklist you can tick, a start-up cost calculator, and a first listing built to Etsy's limits.
What you need before you start
Etsy's help article starts with reading, not a form: what you can sell, its Creativity Standards and Prohibited Items Policy, whether Etsy Payments works where you live, and the fees. Etsy is for items "made by a seller, designed by a seller, handpicked by a seller, or sourced by a seller", which covers handmade work, your own designs, vintage at least 20 years old and craft supplies. Then have these ready:
A desktop browser and an Etsy account
Etsy says the shop must be set up in a desktop web browser. The Etsy Seller app takes over once it is open.
A country where Etsy Payments works
"You can only open an Etsy shop in a country where Etsy Payments is available." In some, Ukraine and India among them, payouts go to a Payoneer account.
A bank account and a debit or credit card
The bank account gets you paid. The card pays Etsy's bills, and any set-up fee is charged to it.
A government ID and a selfie
Persona checks them for Etsy. The ID must not be expired and must match the name on your bank account.
A phone or an authenticator app
Two-factor authentication is required: an authenticator app, which Etsy recommends, a text or a call.
Your first product, ready to list
The first listing is part of opening the shop, so have its photos, facts and price ready.

Opening the shop, step by step
The steps of Etsy's help article, "How to Open an Etsy Shop", in its order, read on 3 October 2026. Your ticks are saved in this browser only.
Two of the ten cost money: the one-time set-up fee, which appears under Total due now if Etsy charges you one, and the first listing at $0.20.

What it costs to start, and per sale
Before the first sale the bill is short. Each listing costs $0.20 to publish and stays live for four months, then renews at $0.20 unless you switch renewal to manual. Add the one-time set-up fee if Etsy charges you one: Etsy says its cost varies by location and shows it at sign-up, so the calculator takes the amount you see rather than guessing one.
After that, Etsy is paid out of each sale: 6.5% of the item price, shipping and gift wrap, plus payment processing, which for a US bank account is 3% + $0.25 on the order total with shipping and sales tax. There is no monthly fee unless you choose Etsy Plus.
Count your own start-up costs
- Listing fees (10 × $0.20, each live 4 months)
- $2.00
- Set-up fee
- $0.00
- Before your first sale
- $2.00
Then each sale of a $25.00 item with $5.00 shipping costs $3.10 in fees (10.3% of what the buyer pays): transaction fee (6.5%) $1.95, payment processing (3% + $0.25) $1.15. A listing with more than one in stock renews for $0.20 after each sale.
Rates from Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy, checked 2026-10-03; US payment processing from Etsy Payments, checked 2026-10-03. Offsite Ads (15%, or 12% after $10,000 in sales over 365 days, capped at $100 an order) apply only to orders that come from Etsy's ads off the site.

Read on Etsy's own pages on 3 October 2026. Fees are before VAT and similar taxes. Processing depends on your bank's country (a UK bank account pays 4% + £0.20), and sellers in the UK, France, Italy, India, Spain, Türkiye, Vietnam and Canada also pay a Regulatory Operating fee. The calculator leaves sales tax out, so a taxed US order costs a few cents more.

Your shop name and shop details
Etsy's name rules, as its help article words them: "4-20 characters in length", "No spaces or special characters", "No profanity", "Not already in use by an existing Etsy member" and "Does not infringe on another's trademark". Etsy suggests capital letters to separate the words, and the name becomes your address: etsy.com/shop/yourname.
You can rename freely before the shop opens, then up to five times yourself, then only with Etsy Support's approval. Old links redirect, and a name once used on an open shop can never be used again. The rest of the shop has Etsy specs too:
- Logo: Etsy's search-visibility page counts a logo toward a complete shop, and says an incomplete shop can lower its listings' visibility.
- About section: Etsy's handmade rules require naming everyone involved in making your items or running the business.
- Shop policies: a return policy, even "No returns", is on Etsy's search-visibility checklist.
- Shipping: Etsy will not save a listing without a processing time and an estimated delivery.

Your first listing decides your views
Etsy's listing form has seven tabs, but a few fields decide whether a search finds you. Etsy says its search takes "a holistic view of your listing – including title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo, reviews, and more", and that using all 13 tags, all the relevant attributes and the most specific category "may all help increase the chance" of a match. Its limits: a title of up to 140 characters, where Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words that clearly state what the item is, and 13 tags of up to 20 characters each.
Here is that finished. For a handmade ceramic coffee mug (category Mugs, 12 oz, speckled white glaze, wheel-thrown stoneware, dishwasher and microwave safe), Sellura returned this Etsy title on 3 October 2026: Handmade Ceramic Coffee Mug, Wheel-Thrown Stoneware, Speckled White Glaze, 12 oz. That is 80 characters and 11 words, with the item named in the first four words and the rest spent on material, finish and size. The same run filled all 13 tags, wrote a 1,546-character description and scored 100 out of 100 (real Sellura output, 3 October 2026).

Before you publish: the checklist Etsy itself uses
Etsy's search visibility page in Shop Manager lists what an active listing needs "for a chance to receive priority placement in relevant search results". It is the nearest thing Etsy publishes to a pass mark:
- At least one image, with a high-resolution primary photo (Etsy recommends 2000 pixels or more).
- A primary photo of one finished product, clear and well lit, not a collage.
- The most specific category for the item.
- A return policy, even "No returns".
- In the US, domestic shipping under $6: Etsy says those listings "will be prioritized in search".
- All 13 tags and every relevant attribute, which Etsy's search article ties to matching more searches.

Photos: the specs Etsy asks for
A listing takes up to 20 photos and two videos of 5 to 15 seconds. Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, and says the first one needs at least 635 pixels on each side "to avoid showing up lower in searches". Make it landscape or square: Etsy crops thumbnails square, portrait and landscape, and that shape keeps the center of the image in every crop.
- File types: .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic only.
- Transparency shows as black, so fill a PNG's background first. Animated GIFs are not supported.
- Files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slower connection.

Pricing your first products
Price so the item still pays after Etsy's share. On the calculator's default, a $25 item with $5 shipping, Etsy's fees are $3.10 a sale plus the $0.20 listing fee, leaving $26.70 of the buyer's $30 before materials, labor and postage. That is our arithmetic on Etsy's US rates.
Offsite Ads change it most. Etsy charges that fee only on sales from its ads on other sites: 15% while the shop is under $10,000 in sales over 365 days, when you may opt out, then 12% for the life of the shop with no opt-out. If you stay in, price so a sale through an ad still covers your costs.
| $25 item, $5 shipping, US | Ordinary sale | Sale from an Offsite Ad |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee (paid when published) | Ordinary sale$0.20 | Sale from an Offsite Ad$0.20 |
| Transaction fee, 6.5% of $30 | Ordinary sale$1.95 | Sale from an Offsite Ad$1.95 |
| Payment processing, 3% of $30 + $0.25 | Ordinary sale$1.15 | Sale from an Offsite Ad$1.15 |
| Offsite Ads, 15% of $30 | Ordinary salenone | Sale from an Offsite Ad$4.50 |
| Etsy's fees in total | Ordinary sale$3.30 | Sale from an Offsite Ad$7.80 |

The first 30 days: what to expect
Etsy publishes no timeline for a first sale, and nothing on the Etsy pages we read says it favors new shops. What it publishes is narrower: a new listing "may take up to 48 hours" to appear in search, and a new listing gets "a small, temporary boost" lasting "anywhere from a few hours to a few days". Renewing just to catch that "isn't an effective search optimisation strategy", Etsy says. A plan built only on those facts:
Days 1–2: let each listing appear
Give it 48 hours, and don't search for it yourself: Etsy says results are personalized, so your own search is not a reliable view.
Week 1: open the search visibility page
Fix the listing, shop and service gaps it flags, then give search a day to catch up.
Weeks 1–4: add listings, not renewals
Etsy's advice is to diversify your inventory and try different relevant tags.
Weeks 2–4: read Stats
Etsy search under How shoppers found you lists the terms that reached your listings. If listings underperform, Etsy suggests refreshing their titles and tags.
Every order: the service basics
Reply promptly and ship on time with tracking. Etsy ranks on review rating, message response rate and case rate from the past three months.

What Sellura does for a new shop, and what it doesn't
Sellura writes listings. Describe the product once and it writes the Etsy version inside Etsy's limits: a title like the 80-character mug title above, 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, a description and attributes. Every generation shows a 0–100 score and a title preview, free and with no card for up to 15 previews, and the score is deterministic: the same listing always gets the same number, and every point traces to a weighted factor. A credit unlocks the finished listing: title, 13 tags, description and attributes. The same product can also be written for eBay, Amazon Handmade, Shopify, Depop and Walmart, each inside its own rules.
The tag generator, keyword tool and Etsy fee calculator are free, and the Listing Grader is free to try for two checks, with one concrete fix per weak factor of a live listing. Sellura does not open the shop, verify your identity, take your photos, track rankings, keep a keyword-research database or promise sales. Starter is $15 a month for 25 credits or $150 a year, and Pro is $24 a month for 65 credits plus bulk generation, or $240 a year.

FAQ
How much does it cost to start an Etsy shop?
Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, so ten listings cost $2.00, plus a one-time set-up fee where it applies: Etsy says that cost varies by location and shows it at sign-up, without publishing the amount. Each sale then costs 6.5% of the item price and shipping plus, for a US bank account, 3% + $0.25 in processing, which is $3.10 on a $25 item with $5 shipping by our calculation. There is no monthly fee unless you choose Etsy Plus at $10 a month.
Can you start an Etsy shop with no money?
Not with none at all. Etsy asks for a debit or credit card for its bills, charges $0.20 per listing, and charges any set-up fee to that card during sign-up. Its fee policy says the set-up fee may be waived in certain circumstances or promotional periods. Transaction and processing fees come out of sales, not your pocket.
What do I need to start an Etsy shop?
A desktop browser, an Etsy account and a country where Etsy Payments works. Then a bank account (a Payoneer account in some countries), a debit or credit card, a government ID and a selfie, a phone or authenticator app for two-factor sign-in, a shop name of 4 to 20 characters and items made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you. Etsy does not require a business license.
How long does it take to set up an Etsy shop?
Etsy's sell page says that in just a few minutes your shop can be open for business. The identity check can run while you keep setting up, and Etsy says a newly published listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search.
How do I get my first sale on Etsy?
Etsy sets no timeline, but it publishes what it rewards: listings that match buyers' words through the title, all 13 tags, every relevant attribute and the most specific category, a clear first photo of the finished item, a return policy and, in the US, domestic shipping under $6. Reply fast and ship on time with tracking. Etsy's help also suggests social media, Etsy Ads, discounts and sales events, and local craft fairs.
Do I need a business license to sell on Etsy?
Etsy says it "doesn't require sellers to have a business license to sell on Etsy", and that sellers must follow the laws that apply to a small business selling online. Which laws those are depends on where you live, and Etsy suggests asking a qualified professional.
Can I change my Etsy shop name later?
Yes. As often as you like before the shop opens, then up to five times in your shop settings, then only with Etsy Support's approval. Capitalization changes and returning to a previous name don't count. Old links redirect, and a name used on an open shop can never be used again.
Before you open Etsy's sign-up, write the first listing: an item-first title under 15 words, all 13 tags, every attribute your category shows, a clear first photo of 2000 pixels or more and a return policy. Then tick through Etsy's ten steps and budget $0.20 a listing plus any set-up fee Etsy shows you. To draft the listing, describe the product to Sellura: the 0–100 score and the title preview cost nothing, a credit unlocks the full listing with its 13 tags and description, and plans start at $15 a month.
