eBay selling tips that eBay's own rules back up
By Oleksandr Shaniuk · founder of Sellura · Updated October 3, 2026
The best eBay selling tips are the ones eBay publishes itself. Its Best Match page lists the factors eBay weighs when it sorts search results: how closely the listing matches the search, how popular the item is, its price, the quality and completeness of the listing, your return policy and handling time, and your record as a seller. Its advice for ranking higher starts with the listing itself: a title that uses eBay's 80 characters on the brand, model and details buyers type, every item specific eBay marks Required or Recommended, because buyers filter on them, and photos of the actual item, up to 24 per listing for free (eBay Help and Seller Center, read 3 October 2026).
- Title characters eBay allows
- 80
- Seller Center: use as many as you can
- Fee on a sale in most categories
- 13.6% + $0.40
- $0.30 per-order fee at $10 or less
- Listings a month with no insertion fee
- 250
- then $0.35 each, fees read 3 Oct 2026
- Photos per listing, free of charge
- 24
- at least 500 px on the longest side
After those come the terms eBay also weighs: a price checked against what comparable items actually sold for, a handling time you always meet, and a stated return policy. Each of the ten tips below pairs one action with the eBay page that backs it and the day we read it. Where eBay publishes nothing, this page says so instead of guessing.
Price it from what already sold
Before you write the listing, find out what the item actually sells for. eBay's pricing help says to check completed listings: open Advanced Search, enter keywords that describe your item, choose Completed listings and search. You see what items like yours sold for, not what other sellers are asking.
For a longer view, use Product research, the tool eBay used to call Terapeak Product Research, under the Research tab in Seller Hub or in the eBay app. eBay's Seller Center says it is free to all sellers. It reaches back 3 years, against 90 days for completed listings, and it records the price an item actually sold for even when a Best Offer was accepted. It also works out the average sold price, the sold price range, shipping costs, the sell-through rate and how many sellers sold the item.

Use all 80 title characters on words buyers type
eBay's Seller Center is direct about it: when a buyer searches, eBay's system finds the listing titles that closely match, and you've got 80 characters, so use as many as you can. Put in the brand, the model or type, colour, style and even the model number, and leave out special characters and irrelevant words. eBay's checklist for a listing that won't show up in search starts with the title too: fix misspellings and words run together, and remove special characters.
The checker below starts from a real Sellura output, 3 October 2026, for a used Nikon D3500 kit: 68 characters, brand and model first, then the kit lens, the 24.2MP sensor and the shutter count. Paste your own title over it to see how many of the 80 characters you use, which words repeat and what the first 40 characters say.
Check your own title
- eBay has no tags field — the title IS the search text. Pack distinct phrases buyers type (brand, item, size, colour, model), most important first.
- Skip filler like "L@@K" or "WOW": eBay's own guidance is plain descriptive keywords, and all-caps hurts click-through.
- Keep your most important keyword inside the first 40 characters — that’s what shoppers see first on mobile.

Fill in every item specific eBay asks for
eBay's Seller Center calls item specifics, together with product identifiers, the most important way to help buyers find what they're looking for. Buyers filter on them, and your item appears in a filtered search only if you've added the matching specific. While you list, eBay also ranks the specifics by how often buyers searched for them over the past 30 days, so fill those first. Each one carries one of four labels:
- Required: you can't publish a new or revised listing without them.
- Required soon: eBay adds new required specifics based on buyers' search trends and flags them while you list.
- Recommended: chosen from buyer demand data and popular searches. eBay's advice is to add as many as you can.
- Additional: details that can save you answering buyers' questions and help you make the sale.

Photograph the actual item, up to 24 times
eBay's picture policy sets the floor: at least one photo 500 pixels on its longest side. Its Seller Center recommends 1600 × 1600 and says to add up to 24 photos to each listing, which eBay doesn't charge for. Make the first one your best shot, the item centred and fully visible, because it is the photo that appears in search results.
eBay's own policy says to take your own images, and it rules out a manufacturer's photos even when they are public. The picture policy also bars these outright, and a listing that breaks it can be removed:
- Photos that don't accurately represent the item
- Stock photos of used, damaged or defective items
- Added borders, text, artwork or marketing material
- Watermarks of any kind, including ownership marks
- Placeholder images used to convey messages

Pick auction or Buy It Now the way eBay suggests
eBay's Best Match page gives the rule. Choose an auction when you're not sure what the item is worth and want to sell it quickly, or when it's unique or hard to find. Choose a fixed price, Buy It Now, when you know its value, have several of the same item or variations of it, list a lot of inventory and want to keep insertion fees down, or want the listing in front of buyers for more than 10 days. eBay's search policy adds that putting identical items in one multi-quantity listing, and sizes or colours in one listing with variations, helps your position in Best Match.
On a fixed price, add Best Offer. eBay says it increases your chances of a sale, and you can set an automatic accept price and a minimum that buyers never see. You have 24 hours to answer an offer before it expires, and you can send offers to buyers who are watching the item or have it in their cart.
| Auction-style | Buy It Now (fixed price) | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing levers | Auction-styleA low starting price, a reserve price in some categories, an optional Buy It Now price at least 30% above the start | Buy It Now (fixed price)Best Offer with automatic accept and decline limits, and offers you send to interested buyers |
| How long it runs | Auction-style1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days | Buy It Now (fixed price)Good 'Til Cancelled, renewed once a calendar month |
| Fees to know | Auction-styleA reserve costs $5 or 7.5% of the reserve, whichever is greater, up to $250, sold or not | Buy It Now (fixed price)Each monthly renewal counts toward your 250 free listings |

Know what eBay keeps before you set the price
In most categories eBay charges one final value fee when the item sells: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 (2.35% on any part above that), plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above that. The total includes the shipping you charge and any sales tax, and eBay adds no separate payment processing fee. Listing is free for your first 250 listings each month, then $0.35 each.
Because the fee reads item plus shipping, a $40 item with $6 shipping and a $46 item with free shipping both cost $6.66. The flat per-order fee is what weighs on cheap items:
| Sale | Final value fee, 13.6% | Per-order fee | eBay keeps | Left before postage and costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $9 item, free shipping | Final value fee, 13.6%$1.22 | Per-order fee$0.30 | eBay keeps$1.52 (16.9%) | Left before postage and costs$7.48 |
| $40 item + $6 shipping | Final value fee, 13.6%$6.26 | Per-order fee$0.40 | eBay keeps$6.66 (14.5%) | Left before postage and costs$39.34 |
| $300 item + $15 shipping | Final value fee, 13.6%$42.84 | Per-order fee$0.40 | eBay keeps$43.24 (13.7%) | Left before postage and costs$271.76 |
Our calculation, with the model behind our eBay fee calculator, from eBay's selling fees page read 3 October 2026. Before sales tax: on a taxed order eBay charges the fee on the tax too. Some categories differ, such as 15.3% for books, movies and music and 6.7% for guitars and basses.

Ship inside a handling time you can always meet
Handling time is the number of days between the buyer's payment and the carrier's first scan, and it is part of the delivery date the buyer sees at checkout. With 1-day handling, the item has to be packed and scanned by 11:59:59 p.m. your time the next day. eBay's advice is the quickest handling time you can consistently meet, and handling time is one of the factors its Best Match page names.
Ship with a carrier that is integrated with eBay and upload tracking within that handling time: eBay says you need an integrated carrier to be protected against item-not-received claims. For the cost, you choose flat rate (the same cost wherever the buyer is), calculated (eBay works out each buyer's price from their location and your package weight and dimensions), free shipping, or local pickup.

State a return policy, even if it's no returns
eBay requires every listing to say whether you accept returns and on what terms. You choose one of five policies, and a few categories, including digital cameras, camera lenses, jewelry and collectibles, also allow 14 days.
Three eBay rules decide which one is worth offering. A “no returns” policy doesn't cover an item that doesn't match its listing: under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, the buyer can still send that back. The return policy is one of the terms Best Match weighs. And for a Top Rated seller, 30-day or longer free returns plus same-day or 1-business-day handling make a listing Top Rated Plus.
| Policy | Return postage paid by | Counts toward Top Rated Plus |
|---|---|---|
| No returns | Return postage paid byNot offered, but not-as-described returns still apply | Counts toward Top Rated PlusNo |
| 30-day buyer-paid returns | Return postage paid byBuyer | Counts toward Top Rated PlusNo |
| 30-day free returns | Return postage paid byYou | Counts toward Top Rated PlusYes |
| 60-day buyer-paid returns | Return postage paid byBuyer | Counts toward Top Rated PlusNo |
| 60-day free returns | Return postage paid byYou | Counts toward Top Rated PlusYes |
From eBay's return policy and seller standards pages, read 3 October 2026. Top Rated Plus also needs same-day or 1-business-day handling. In some categories eBay gives the fee discount, but not the seal, without free returns.

Guard your seller level: what eBay checks on the 20th
On the 20th of each month eBay rates every seller Top Rated, Above Standard or Below Standard. The minimum is a transaction defect rate of no more than 2%, where a defect is an order you cancel unexpectedly or a buyer's issue you don't resolve, and no more than 2 cases closed without seller resolution, or 0.3% of transactions if that is higher.
Fall below it and eBay says your items may be placed lower in Best Match and you're blocked from Promoted Listings. From the 1st of the next month you may pay higher final value fees too: an extra 6% on the US site. Top Rated asks for tighter numbers and a sales history:
| Measure | Minimum standard | Top Rated |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction defect rate | Minimum standardNo more than 2% | Top RatedNo more than 0.5%, from no more than 3 buyers |
| Cases closed without seller resolution | Minimum standardNo more than 2 (or 0.3%) | Top RatedNo more than 2 (or 0.3%) |
| Late shipment rate | Minimum standardNot judged on its own | Top RatedNo more than 5 (or 3%) |
| Tracking uploaded within handling time and validated by the carrier | Minimum standardNot required | Top RatedAt least 95% of transactions |
| Selling history | Minimum standardNone | Top Rated90 days active, 100 transactions and $1,000 with US buyers in 12 months |
From eBay's Seller standards policy, read 3 October 2026. A shipment counts as late only when there is no carrier scan within your handling time and delivery comes after the latest estimated date. Sellers with more than 400 transactions in 3 months are judged on those 3 months, everyone else on 12.

Treat Promoted Listings as optional, and know what each costs
Ads are a choice, not a listing requirement, and eBay's Best Match page lists no ad spend among its factors. Promoted Listings comes in two strategies that charge for different things. General: you set an ad rate of 2% to 100% of the total sale and pay it only if the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad, where a click includes adding it to a watchlist or cart. Priority: you pay for every click, priced in a second-price auction, within a target daily budget of at least $3, and if you leave that budget alone, a month's spend stays within 30.4 times it.
Only Above Standard or Top Rated sellers with enough account activity can promote, and eBay's eligibility covers fixed-price listings in most categories, while Priority takes no auctions at all. The ad fee comes on top of the final value fee, and accepting a Best Offer still triggers it if any buyer clicked your General ad in the previous 30 days, so set the rate from your margin.

What Sellura does here, and what it doesn't
Sellura writes the parts of tips 2 and 3 you type. Describe the product once, choose eBay, and it returns a front-loaded title that never goes over the 80-character cap, search phrases for the title and item specifics, a core set of eight item specifics, and a description. Every generation gets a 0–100 score that is deterministic: the same listing always gets the same number, every point traces to a weighted factor, and each weak factor comes with one concrete fix. The Nikon title in tip 2 scored 99 out of 100.
The score and title preview are free on every generation (15 before we ask you to make an account, and never a card), and so are the eBay title checker and fee calculator. The Listing Grader is free to try, with 2 checks on a live eBay listing. A credit unlocks one finished listing: Starter is $15 a month for 25 credits or $150 a year, and Pro is $24 a month for 65 credits plus bulk, or $240 a year. Sellura doesn't list on eBay for you, run your ads, research sold prices or hold eBay search-volume data, and it is not affiliated with eBay.

FAQ
What are the best tips for selling on eBay?
Follow what eBay publishes. Price from what comparable items sold for, using completed listings or the free Product research tab in Seller Hub. Use the title's 80 characters on the brand, model and details buyers type, fill every Required and Recommended item specific, and add up to 24 photos of the actual item. Then set a handling time you can always meet and a clear return policy, because eBay's Best Match weighs both.
How do I get more views on my eBay listings?
First make sure it can be found. eBay says a new listing should show in search within 24 hours, and if it doesn't, to check that it is active and fix misspellings, words run together and special characters such as ! @ / * in the title. Then work on what Best Match names: a title and item specifics that match buyers' searches, price, photos, completeness, returns, handling time and your seller record.
How many photos should an eBay listing have?
As many as it takes to show the item from every side, up to 24, which eBay doesn't charge for. The picture policy requires at least one photo 500 pixels on its longest side, and eBay's Seller Center recommends 1600 × 1600. The first photo is the one buyers see in search results, so make it the whole item, centred.
Should I offer free shipping on eBay?
eBay recommends it. Its Seller Center says buyers are attracted to free shipping, suggests making it a permanent feature, and says listings with free shipping and delivery within 1 to 3 days stand out in search results. It also says free shipping may not be possible for every item. eBay's fee covers item plus shipping, so a $46 item with free shipping and a $40 item with $6 shipping both pay $6.66.
Is it worth paying for Promoted Listings on eBay?
Only if the numbers work for your margin. A General ad costs nothing unless the item sells within 30 days of a click, and then you pay the rate you chose, 2% to 100% of the total sale, on top of the final value fee. A Priority ad charges for every click, sale or not. eBay's Best Match page lists no ad spend among its factors, so fix the title, item specifics, photos and price first.
How do I become a Top Rated seller on eBay?
Meet eBay's criteria at the monthly evaluation on the 20th: an account active for at least 90 days, at least 100 transactions and $1,000 in sales with US buyers over 12 months, a defect rate of 0.5% or less, no more than 5 late shipments (or 3%), no more than 2 cases closed without seller resolution (or 0.3%), and tracking uploaded within handling time for 95% of transactions. eBay upgrades you on the 1st of the following month.
How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?
In most categories, $14.00 on a $100 order with no shipping charged: the 13.6% final value fee ($13.60) plus the $0.40 per-order fee, by our calculation from eBay's fee page, read 3 October 2026. Charge $10 for shipping and it is $15.36, because the fee covers shipping too. Sales tax also counts toward the total eBay charges on, and some categories have other rates.
On Monday, take one listing that isn't selling and work down this page. Check what items like it actually sold for in completed listings or Product research, rewrite the title to use the 80 characters on brand, model and the details buyers type, fill every Required and Recommended item specific, reshoot it with up to 24 photos of the real item, and set a handling time and return policy you can keep. Leave ads until all of that is done. Then paste the title into the free eBay title checker and the price into the fee calculator, and let Sellura write the next listing: the score and title preview are free, and a credit buys the finished listing.
