Depop vs eBay: where should you sell this item?

By · founder of Sellura · Updated October 14, 2026

Sell secondhand clothes on Depop if keeping more of each sale matters most. Sell on eBay if Depop won't take the item, if you want buyers abroad without handling customs, or if you want to be paid before the parcel arrives. On fees the gap is wide. Depop charges US sellers no selling fee, only payment processing of 3.3% + $0.45. eBay takes 13.6% plus $0.40 an order in most categories, clothing included, with processing built in (both fee pages, read 14 October 2026).

In money: a $40 item with $6 shipping costs $1.97 in fees on Depop and $6.66 on eBay (our calculation, US seller, no ads). Boost that Depop sale, shipped on a Depop label, and the fee rises to $6.77, about what eBay takes anyway. eBay has owned Depop since 30 July 2026, but they are still two marketplaces with their own listings, fees and search, so the choice below is still yours to make.

The short answer, by what you sell

Depop calls itself a peer-to-peer circular fashion marketplace for secondhand fashion. eBay's selling page says you can sell almost anything, from homemade goods to used or unused items from your closet. So for clothes, shoes and accessories both are open, and the fee gap decides most cases. Outside fashion, Depop's prohibited-items list rules out a lot, technology and electronics among them.

Three things can still tip a fashion seller to eBay: buyers abroad, how fast you get paid, and a buyer who wants to pay the moment an offer is accepted. The table is our read of both marketplaces' own pages.

What one sale costs on each

Depop removed its selling fee for sellers in the US, UK and Australia. What a US seller pays is Depop Payments processing: 3.3% + $0.45, charged on the item price plus shipping and any tax. eBay charges one final value fee when the item sells: 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 in most categories, which covers general clothing, plus $0.40 an order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). eBay includes payment processing in that fee.

Both charge their percentage on the shipping the buyer pays, so the calculator starts at a $40 item with $6 shipping and $12 of cost. At those rates eBay's fee runs about three to four times Depop's, and the gap in dollars grows with the price. Change the numbers to try your own sale.

Run your own numbers

The postage label is left out on purpose: it costs the same whichever marketplace the order came from, so including it would subtract one number from every row and tell you nothing. Each marketplace's own calculator takes the real label cost.

  • Neither charges to list in this comparison: Depop's fee table has no listing fee, and eBay gives every account up to 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 each.
  • Depop charges US and UK buyers a Marketplace fee at checkout, up to 5% of the item price plus up to $1. It never comes out of your payout, but it raises the price the buyer sees.
  • eBay adds an international fee of 1.65% when the buyer's address is outside the US, unless the order goes through eBay International Shipping.

Boosting and Promoted Listings: where the gap closes

Depop's Boosted Listings charge 12% of the item price to US and UK sellers when a buyer interacts with the boosted tile and buys within 28 days. Shipping is added to that 12% only if you arranged your own label. On the $40 sale shipped with a Depop label, the boost takes the fee from $1.97 to $6.77, a few cents more than eBay's $6.66 with no ads at all.

eBay's general Promoted Listings work the same way in principle: you set an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the total sale, and pay it only when the item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad. Since eBay starts from the higher base, even the minimum 2% rate takes the same $46 sale from $6.66 to $7.58 (our arithmetic).

Three horizontal bars for the same $46 sale of a $40 item plus $6 shipping. Depop without a boost takes $1.97 and leaves $44.03. Depop with a boost takes $6.77 and leaves $39.23. eBay without promotion takes $6.66 and leaves $39.34.
Boost one Depop sale and you keep about what eBay would have left you without any ads. Depop's price advantage lives in the sales you don't boost.
  • Depop boost: 12% for US and UK sellers on new listings from 23 March 2026, 8% elsewhere. Charged only if the buyer saw the boosted tile and bought within 28 days.
  • eBay general campaign: 2% to 100% of the total sale, including shipping and tax, only if the item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad.
  • On either, a sale that didn't come through the ad pays no ad fee.

Who shops where, in each marketplace's own words

Depop counts more than 56 million registered users and over 68 million items for sale on its newsroom, and the release announcing the eBay deal describes a highly engaged Gen Z and Millennial customer base. Its search mainly shows a shopper listings from the country set in their preferences, and buyers can't send offers on items from another country.

eBay's selling page speaks to a broader crowd: cash in on your pre-loved pieces, millions of buyers are waiting, and its page title names electronics, fashion and home & garden. Neither page we read gives a comparable buyer count for the US alone, so we don't rank the two by size.

  • Fashion with a trend or vintage angle: Depop's own description of its buyers fits.
  • A known item a buyer narrows down by brand and size: eBay's filters are built for it (see the listing section below).
  • Anything that isn't fashion: check Depop's prohibited-items list before you list.

One jacket, two listings: a first line or an 80-character title

Depop has no title field. Its help tells you to start the description with a title, the words you would search for as a buyer, then add measurements, condition and shipping, using up to five hashtags. Depop also generates tags and keywords for you, and its search matches a shopper's words against the description, brand, category and color.

eBay gives you an 80-character title and tells you to use as many characters as you can. Its system finds the titles that closely match a search, and buyers then filter by item specifics such as brand, size and color. So the same jacket comes out in two shapes, and the words that sit in Depop's first line and hashtags have to fit eBay's title and specifics instead.

Two listing cards for one vintage denim jacket. The Depop card has no title box: its description opens with the 45-character line Vintage 90s Light Wash Denim Trucker Jacket M and five empty hashtag slots sit below it. The eBay card shows the title Vintage 90s Light Wash Denim Trucker Jacket Oversized Women's M at 63 of 80 characters. Below it sit item specifics for brand, size, color and style that are labelled as buyer filters. Scores read 98 and 99 out of 100.
On Depop the search words open the description and spill into five hashtags. On eBay they have to fit an 80-character title, and the details go into item specifics, the fields buyers filter by.

Offers, shipping and getting paid

The two settle a sale at different speeds. On eBay you have 24 hours to answer a Best Offer, and in most cases the buyer pays the moment you accept, which ends the listing. On Depop you have 14 days to answer, the buyer then has 14 days to pay, and until they do anyone can still buy the item at full price.

Money moves differently too. eBay sends payouts to your bank Monday to Friday, within two business days of confirming the buyer's payment. Depop puts the money in your Depop Balance two business days after the item shows as delivered, or ten business days after the sale if that comes first, and a withdrawal can take up to five days to reach your bank.

eBay owns Depop now: what that changes for you

eBay completed its acquisition of Depop on 30 July 2026. Depop's own release says it keeps its distinct brand, platform, customer experience and culture, and operates as a complementary business within eBay. It describes no shared listings, shared search or shared fees, and Depop's fee and ranking pages we read on 14 October 2026 say nothing about eBay.

So for a seller, nothing about the choice has merged. A Depop listing is not an eBay listing, each marketplace charges its own fees, and each ranks its own search. If you want both audiences, you still list twice.

Selling on both at once

Nothing in the pages we read from either marketplace stops you listing the same piece on both. What eBay does forbid is finishing a sale off eBay: if you offer or ask for contact details to sell outside eBay, it charges the final value fee on the total even when the item doesn't sell.

  1. Write each listing for its own form

On Depop, the search words go in the first line and the five hashtags. On eBay, they fill the 80-character title, and brand, size and color go into item specifics.

  2. Price each for its own fees

Run the same item through both calculators. On a $40 item with $6 shipping, eBay takes $4.69 more, so a price that works on Depop may need raising on eBay.

  3. End the other listing the moment a one-off sells

An accepted eBay Best Offer usually closes the sale at once, while an accepted Depop offer leaves the item open to anyone who pays first.

What Sellura does here, and what it doesn't

Sellura writes both listings from one description of the item. Choose Depop and it returns a first line, a description and five hashtags. Choose eBay and it returns a title inside 80 characters, search keyword phrases and item specifics. The jacket headlines above are what it returned on 14 October 2026. Each listing gets a 0 to 100 score that is deterministic: the same listing always gets the same number, every point traces to a weighted factor, and each weak factor comes with one concrete fix.

Free, no card: the headline preview and score on every generation (15 before we ask you to make an account), the Depop and eBay fee calculators, and the Depop and eBay title checkers. The Listing Grader is free to try, with 2 checks. A credit unlocks one finished listing with every field. Starter is $15 a month for 25 credits, or $150 a year. Pro is $24 a month for 65 credits plus bulk, or $240 a year.

  • It doesn't post to Depop or eBay, sync stock or end the other listing for you.
  • It doesn't pick the marketplace. The item, the fees and the buyers above do.
  • It has no research database, no rank tracking and no ads analysis, and it is not affiliated with Depop or eBay.

FAQ

Is it better to sell on Depop or eBay?

For secondhand clothes, Depop leaves you more of each sale: $1.97 in fees on a $40 item with $6 shipping against $6.66 on eBay, at the US rates read on 14 October 2026. eBay is the better fit for items Depop prohibits, such as most electronics, for buyers abroad through eBay International Shipping, and for faster payouts.

Does Depop take 10% of a sale?

Not in the US, UK or Australia. Depop charges sellers there no selling fee, only payment processing, which is 3.3% + $0.45 in the US. The 10% selling fee applies to sellers outside those countries. Buyers in the US and UK pay a separate Marketplace fee of up to 5% plus up to $1, which never comes out of your payout.

Are eBay fees higher than Depop fees?

Yes, at every price we ran: 13.6% plus $0.40 an order in most eBay categories, clothing included, against Depop's 3.3% + $0.45 processing. With $6 shipping that is $3.26 against $1.14 on a $15 item and $17.54 against $4.61 on a $120 item. A boosted Depop sale narrows the gap, since the boost adds 12% of the item price.

Did eBay buy Depop?

Yes. eBay completed the acquisition on 30 July 2026. Depop says it keeps its own brand, platform and customer experience, and the release describes no shared listings or search, so listing on one does not list on the other and each still charges its own fees.

Can I sell the same item on Depop and eBay?

Yes. Nothing in either marketplace's pages we read stops it. Write each listing for its own fields, price each for its own fees, and end the other listing as soon as a one-of-a-kind piece sells. Don't move a buyer off eBay to finish a sale: eBay charges the final value fee anyway.

Which pays out faster, Depop or eBay?

eBay. It sends payouts within two business days of confirming the buyer's payment, Monday to Friday. Depop releases the money to your Depop Balance two business days after delivery, or ten business days after the sale if that comes first, and a withdrawal can take up to five days to reach your bank.

Choose by the item, then by the fee. Secondhand fashion goes to Depop first, where a US seller pays 3.3% + $0.45 and keeps $44.03 of a $46 sale. Electronics, buyers abroad and sellers who need cash fast go to eBay, which keeps $6.66 of the same sale. Boost on Depop only when the listing truly needs it, because a boosted sale costs about what eBay charges. Run your own price through the free fee calculators, then describe the item once and see the Depop first line and its score free before you spend a credit.
